The breathtaking peninsula of Kalpitiya, situated on the North-western coast of Sri Lanka, is one of the top destinations for kitesurfing in the region, placing the island on the map with the international kitesurfing community. Here are some reasons to go kitesurfing in Kalpitiya, Sri Lanka.
Kitesurfing for all, with flat calm shallow lagoon waters and choppy seas:
Kalpitiya caters to all levels of Kiters, from beginners to advanced and professional. Since Kalpitiya is a peninsula, it enjoys a lagoon on one side and the Indian Ocean on the other. This duality makes for different water surface conditions catering for varying levels of expertise of kitesurfing. The lagoon is shallow and perfect for the not too confident beginners. Its flat water surface with high winds makes it ideal for those looking for freestyle sessions. The ocean, during the monsoon period, on the other hand, produces beautiful long waves that unroll making it the unforgettable wave riding sessions for advanced kiters.
High wind conditions several months in a year:
The south-west monsoon season in Sri Lanka lasts from May to October, making this the best time to go kitesurfing in Kalpitiya. During this time, there are strong south-west winds almost daily, at an average speed of 20 – 25 knots, peaking at 30 knots, all day long. During the north-west monsoon that lasts from December to March, the winds here are milder, around 12 – 20 knots a few days a week, but are still suitable to kite on most days. On these days and during this time you will need a 12 or 15 meter kite. If you don’t have one you could rent it.
IKO certified kitesurfing schools and centres:
Kalpitiya has several kitesurfing schools set up, with good equipment and well experienced IKO certified instructors. Even if you happen to start from scratch or are a seasoned kiter, you will benefit from the support of the instructors who will help you make the most of your experience in Sri Lanka. There are excellent Discovery, Beginner and Advanced Courses for all skill levels, conducted in either group classes or one-on-one, depending on your preference and demand at the time. There are also opportunities here to improve on your skill levels and obtain VDWS International Certification for your internationally recognised kitesurfing license card.
The rental of kite equipment is included in course prices from our recommended kitesurfing school. They are also well equipped to rent equipment to advanced kiters. Individual gear such as kites, boards, harness and boots are also available for rent, join them on their discovery kite tour or enjoy a downwinder starting from right in front of our resort.
